AustraliaMetrics is built and run by High Impact Group, an AI-native group whose ventures all use artificial intelligence at their core. The group publishes a single set of AI principles that govern how every company in the portfolio builds with AI. This page sets out how those principles work in practice here, on AustraliaMetrics.
The short version: AI has a deliberately narrow job on this site. It helps you read the data — it never decides what the data says. The numbers come from official sources; the AI only ever reads them back to you, in plain language.
AI does a deliberately narrow job here. We use it in two places:
Bob is an AI assistant, not a person, and will tell you so. Both Bob and Bob's Take work only from the data published on this dashboard — they don't browse the web, and they don't draw on a model's general knowledge.
AI never touches the data itself. Every figure on AustraliaMetrics comes from authoritative sources — the ABS, RBA, AIHW, the World Bank and others — and is brought in by an automated pipeline. The AI reads those numbers; it never writes, edits or estimates them.
The judgement calls stay with people. How each metric is scored (Red / Amber / Green), the thresholds behind those scores, the weights in the composite index, and the political-period shading on charts are all set and documented by a person, not chosen by a model. They're explained on our About and methodology page.
Bob's Take is drafted by AI, then edited by a person and published by hand. Nothing AI-written goes live on the site automatically.
We hold Bob to a higher standard of honesty than a typical chatbot.
You don't need an account to use AustraliaMetrics, and browsing the dashboard sets no cookies. When you ask Bob a question, your message is sent to Anthropic's Claude API to generate the answer; we don't store your conversations. Bob can hold a little context within a single chat (say, that you're a renter in Brisbane) to make its answers more relevant, but that memory is never saved between sessions, and Bob is instructed never to ask for sensitive personal details. Full detail is in our Privacy Policy.
AustraliaMetrics is free, factual and non-partisan, and accountable to the public — not to a client. We'll keep the AI's job narrow and its honesty strict, we'll be plain about what it is and isn't, and we'll change, constrain or switch off anything that stops serving that purpose. If you ever see Bob get something wrong, tell us through the contact form— and we'll fix it in the open.
