Cost of Living by Household Type: methodology
Category: Cost of Living · Unit: % change on a year earlier · Published quarterly
What this metric measures
How fast the cost of living is rising for five kinds of household: employees, age pensioners, pensioner and beneficiary households, other government transfer recipients and self-funded retirees. The headline line is the all-groups consumer price index, for comparison.
Why it matters: Households spend their money differently, so the same price rises are not felt equally. The Selected Living Cost Indexes weight prices by what each type of household actually buys, so they show who is being hit hardest.
