Federal Workforce Headcount — methodology

What this metric measures

Total Australian Public Service headcount by agency and classification level (APS1-6, EL1-2, SES1-3). Includes ongoing and non-ongoing staff.

Why it matters: Shows the size and shape of the public service — which agencies are growing, which are shrinking, and the ratio of senior to junior staff.
