Methodology
What it is: A simple sum of shelf prices for 14 everyday items, captured monthly from Coles and Woolworths (Sydney metro). Each item's price is the arithmetic mean of both retailers.
Items (14): 1L milk, 12 eggs, 1 loaf bread (~700g), 1kg chicken breast, 1kg beef mince, 1kg potatoes, 1kg apples, 1kg sugar, 1kg flour, 500g dry pasta, 400g canned tomatoes, 1kg white rice, 1kg frozen vegetables, 1L petrol (ULP 91).
Index: The basket index sets the first month with complete data = 100. Subsequent months show the percentage change from that base.
What it is NOT: This is not a cost-of-living index, not quality-adjusted, and uses no substitution or weighting. It cannot be directly compared to CPI. The CPI overlay (when shown) is for visual context only.
Data quality flags: COMPLETE = all 14 items from both retailers, PARTIAL = some items or retailers missing, MISSING = insufficient data.
